Kindreds at the Kinsmen

What do you see in the clouds today?

I haven’t mentioned how flat Saskatchewan is. At one point, D and I made a bet as to how far down the road we could see. Ahead of us was a straight highway, maybe a few minor dips where the pavement disappears in a low area (can’t even call it a valley) for a brief moment, then reappears as though you had just blinked and, oh, there it is again! So, how far can you see on a Saskatchewan highway? Any guesses? Five kilometres? Nope. Eight kilometres? Try again. If you had guessed ten kilometres, you would be right! But boring? Not on your life! So many people we’ve met travelling across Canada say the prairie provinces are nothing but wheat fields and highway. True, but look a little closer and you’ll see there’s so much more –little towns and villages with quaint names, such as Big Quill Lake, Rosetown and Marengo (which sounds more like a dance move to me!) Miles and miles of fields in vivid shades of green, with crops all planted in perfectly straight rows. Abandoned farms with weathered barns tilted at precarious angles. Cattle of every colour, shape and size. An endless blue sky dotted with clouds the shape of giant rabbits and fire breathing dragons… it’s never-ending fascination for me.

But I digress.

What exactly did I mean by, ‘Kindreds at the Kinsmen’? Well, we stopped for the night at the Kinsmen Campground in Tisdale, SK. There was another LTV parked in a spot near us, also with BC plates. As we set up for the night, it looked as though no one was in the other van, but a little while later, Al came over and introduced himself. Turned out, he and his wife Kay live in Vernon, BC and they were also on their way to The Pas, MB! Al mentioned the golf course nearby served breakfast on Wednesday mornings, and it so happened the next day was Wednesday! The four of us wandered over to the golf course in the morning for a lovely breakfast and friendly chat. Owning a Leisure Travel Van is like having instant family – kindred souls.

Not many photos to show this post, so here is one of the prettier bugs we've come across so far - any idea what it is?
