About that Loonie...

The world's largest one-dollar Canadian coin

Artist Robert Ralph Carmichael of Echo Bay, ON did many drawings for the Canadian mint over the years, but apparently he was most chuffed when he got the call in late 1987 to say his drawing of a loon had been chosen for the reverse side of the now iconic one-dollar Canadian coin.

The monument to the Loonie coin was erected on the side of the only road in the tiny town of Echo Bay in 2012 to honour the coin's 25th anniversary.

Apparently, the original plan was to put two canoeists on the coin. I wonder what we would have called it then?
